Announcing Size Matters — a first-person puzzle where scale is the mechanic

Today we are introducing Size Matters, the first of four prototypes from the Omen IV Intern Prototype Collection.

Size Matters is a first-person environmental puzzle game built around one ability: the power to change the size of objects. Armed with a device capable of shrinking and enlarging the environment, the player infiltrates a secured museum and uses scale itself as a problem-solving tool.

A crate blocking a doorway is no longer an obstacle if it can be shrunk. A pedestal too short to climb becomes a staircase when enlarged. An object too heavy to move becomes small enough to carry. A dangerous laser can be blocked by turning an ordinary object into a giant piece of cover.

Instead of searching the environment for the correct tool, the player changes the properties of the environment until the objects already around them become the tools they need. Scale is the mechanic. Perspective is the puzzle.

Scale manipulation becomes most interesting because objects can also be physically repositioned. A typical puzzle may involve several stages: shrink an object, pick it up, move it somewhere useful, place it, enlarge it, climb onto it. The mechanic becomes about rearranging spaces through scale.

Size Matters is an internship prototype from the Omen IV Intern Prototype Collection — a set of experiments built around a simple idea: how much game can you build around one strong mechanic?
